The preseason 3A No. 10 ranked Carlisle Wildcats opened its season on the road May 22 at No. 5 Pella in a re-match of the 2016 3A state semifinals. After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first, the Wildcats answered with four runs in the second and third innings to hold a 8-1 lead before hanging on for 11-10 victory.
Junior Nic McCay gave the Wildcats momentum with a second-inning grand slam to right center field. McCay would end his stellar opening night 3-4 at the plate with a home run, six RBI and a sacrifice.
The Dutch scored five runs in the fourth inning to come within two, 8-6. In the top of the fifth, junior Nate Mortimer would rip a two-RBI single as a part of a three-run inning. In the sixth frame, Pella relied on two big bats in their lineup, Jaden Rolffs and Tyler Hillman to get four more runs on the board, but the Wildcats were able to hold their lead at 11-10 and secure a big win to open the season.
Sophomore Isaiah Henrichs would record the last two outs of the game on strikeouts to earn his first save on the season, while also going 2-3 at the plate with two doubles. Mortimer picked up his first win in a relief appearance and was 2-5 at the plate with two RBI for the Cats.
The 1-0 Wildcats will hit the road again May 23 when they travel to Chariton.
