The Wildcat Girls Basketball team opened its 2018-19 season at the Newton Girls' Varsity Holiday Tournament on Saturday, November 17th. The Wildcats came away with an impressive win against last year's state qualifier, the Nevada Cubs, after trailing by as much as 21 points in the third quarter. By the end of the third frame, the Wildcats had cut the lead to nine points. With less than a minute on the clock in the fourth quarter, the game was tied at 51. Junior Kennedy Preston came up with a critical steal with less than 10 seconds remaining and connected with junior Delaney Schnathorst for two to close out the game, 53-51.
A happy Head Coach Bryan White said, "I thought we showed a lot of heart and composure, and we just never really gave up. I was very proud of the girls and their effort. It was a great way to start off our season."
Leading the way for the Wildcats in scoring was Preston with 17 points. Junior Molly Hoekstra and senior Megan Sievers added 12 points apiece, while Schnathorst chipped in seven. Rounding out the scoring was junior Kennady Prenosil with four, sophomore Aubrey Furnal with two points and sophomore Sydney Berg with one point. On the offensive and defensive boards, Hoekstra grabbed eight rebounds followed closely by Preston with seven and Prenosil six. The Wildcats also tallied 17 steals in the season opener.
Looking ahead, the Wildcats will host the DC-G Fillies on Tuesday (11/27) and open Raccoon River Conference play against the Bondurant Bluejays on Friday (11/30).
