Carlisle Hosts Van Meter in Iowa Pride Challenge

Carlisle will host Van Meter in a boys basketball scrimmage on Nov. 21 as part of the Iowa Pride Challenge. The Iowa Hall of Pride Challenge is a voluntary statewide community service initiative. Schools take part in the Iowa Pride Challenge by participating in a community service project of their choosing. Part of the mission of the Iowa Hall of Pride is "educating the future." This is done through programs for students, including educational materials, programming and student leadership events.

The Iowa Hall of Pride Challenge was created to provide support to the Iowa Hall of Pride and other charitable causes across the state. Many schools incorporate community service as an extension of learning in the classroom. The Pride Challenge provides an opportunity for member schools to participate in a community service project, as well as a platform to highlight their school, students and activities.

The proceeds from the event will be split. A $250 contribution will be made to the Richard Jacobson Education Fund at the Iowa Hall of Pride to be used to further the Hall of Pride's mission to "educate the future." The remaining proceeds will be donated to Blank Children's Hospital where Head Coach Seth Poldberg's daughter, Lucy, received care this summer for a very rare virus that can be deadly for infants.

Lucy was hospitalized with an extremely high fever on July 3rd and following a spinal tap, the doctors determined she was suffering from parechovirus. She really struggled for the next 48 hours as the virus attacked her liver. At one point, doctors thought she would need a liver transplant. At times, her prognosis was not very good. However, through a great deal of support and prayer and extraordinary care from the medical professionals at Blank Children's Hospital, Lucy made a full recovery and was discharged on July 10th.

The time spent at the hospital was unique in that Coach Poldberg's wife, Laura, has worked as an RN, BSN at Blank since 2011. The Poldbergs feel extremely blessed to have a healthy baby girl and are very appreciative of the fantastic care they received at Blank Children's Hospital and would like to give back to a place that devotes itself to helping children.
